Her career in television began when she starred as the main character on FX's Black comedy crime series Fargo. Based on The 1996 Coen brothers film of similar title, Fargo starred veteran actors Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman and Bob Odenkirk. Tolman's performance in the role of Minnesota police officer Molly Solverson was praised by Vanity Fair, who wrote: "She calmly and confidently stole the whole performance". Tolman won the Critics' Choice Television Award for her performance in the category Best Supporting Actress in Movies/Miniseries. In addition, her nominations for Best Actress were received at the Emmy Awards as well as the Golden Globes. Tolman also had an appearance on the Mindy Show as Abby Berman a romance writer. In 2015, she played a supporting character in Michael Dougherty's comedy horror film Krampus. Tolman turned down a variety of supporting parts, including the ones played by mothers, wifes and besties, after her debut in Fargo. Tolman wanted a distinct character. In 2017, Tolman starred in ABC's Downward Dog, based on the Animal Media Group web series, It was canceled following one season. Tolman was the main character in ABC's drama series Emergence which premiered on September 24, 2019. The show was canceled on May 21, 2020 after only one season, despite "pretty solid" viewership, according to Tolman. The actress was also a guest star on NBC's Good Girls. In 2021 she was a guest star as Alma Filcott in the second season of the drama show Why Women Kill, and was Natalie Green in The Facts of Life section in the third episode of Live in Front of a Studio Audience.
